Neil Welch Continuous Resonance Solo Project

Date: 10/08/2015
Location: The loading dock at the Columbia Basin College performance theatre.
Instrument: Tenor saxophone

Notes: (Documented while traveling in the Fall, 2015 Bad Luck duo national tour).

Shortly after finishing up a performance at Columbia Basin College we began loading our gear back into my car. In the room next to the loading dock was a community college marching band practicing a medley of pop-rock hits. I recorded this improvisation in the loading dock next to the door which would have entered into this rehearsal room.

*In the spirit of creating work within a series, in this case a collection of work drawn from experiences on the road, all improvisations I documented during the fall Bad Luck duo US/Canada tour are accompanied by images from Pierre Alechinsky paintings.*

This improvisation documents quarter tone fingerings threaded/interrupted by multiphonics, exploring the beauty of this large room through the intersection of timbre and reverberation.

Date: 10/05/2015
Location: Discovery Park. Seattle, WA
Instrument: Tenor saxophone

Notes:

This piece documents my first trip to Discovery Park, one of Seattleâs treasured recreational areas. I have a new student that lives near the entrance, and I arrived a half hour early to their home. I took the opportunity to walk into the woods some distance in search of an improvisation to offer itself to me.

Date: 10/02/2015
Location: Childhood home in Edmonds, WA
Instrument: Tenor saxophone

Notes:

This improvisation utilized primarily a single fingering which I altered by opening and closing keys in the right hand stack. This created interruptions in the air flow that intersected with pitch clusters, then carrying through the breaks to create their own clusters and overtone colors.
